Piteau Associates offers services relating to contaminated sites, and has conducted assessment and remediation projects at several large properties contaminated by historic activities. These include rail yards, industrial properties, airports, chemical storage facilities, sawmills, and former coal gasification plants. We have experience dealing with contaminants including petroleum hydrocarbons (gasoline, diesel, bunker fuel), chlorinated solvents (PCE, TCE), metals, coal tar, wood preservatives (chlorinated phenol, creosote, CCA), and PCBs.
Our team is knowledgeable with respect to the complex regulatory regime for contaminated sites in British Columbia, and has obtained contaminated sites legal instruments (e.g., Certificate of Compliance & Approval in Principal) for several sites. These have ranged from relatively simple (small and single contaminant in soil or groundwater, no off-site migration), to highly complex (large, multiple uses, and multiple contaminants in soil, groundwater, sediment, and vapour, with off-site migration).
Our contaminated sites staff is experienced with investigation methods needed to provide rigorously reliable, defensible, and repeatable chemical and physical data needed to define the extent of contamination in soil, sediment, groundwater, and vapour. We have experience with remedial methods including source removal (e.g., bulk excavation), ex-situ treatment (water treatment & bioremediation), in-situ treatment (e.g., air-sparging & soil vapour extraction), natural attenuation, and containment using flow barriers (e.g., sheet piles, jet grouting, & soil-bentonite).
Human health and ecological risk assessment services are provided through strategic partnerships with experienced professionals.
There is one practicing member of the Contaminated Site Approved Professionals (CSAP) Society on Piteau Associates’ staff. He is supported by technicians and environmental scientists with significant contaminated sites experience.
Expert advice relating to identification of contaminant source(s) and responsible parties, and estimation of remediation costs is also available.
